Check out the DVD box set of the Twilight Zone TV series, and watch the Burgess Meredith episode in which he plays a librarian who would rather lock himself away in the vault of a library and read, rather than be with people. Some days I wish I could do that. But, then I'm a person who not only knows how to read, but does it seamlessly. Words appear on a bus, train, chewing gum wrapper and they're in my head. A voice inside me is speaking them to me. And, I understand them. So, books have a way of carrying me to a new place. I was asked by neighbors, immigrants from Iran, to help one of their sons, a 10 year old (I think) with his reading. The kid speaks Farsi, Hebrew and English, and is probably more than proficient with his Hebrew reading. But, he's now in a public school and needs to get up to speed with his English reading.
I told the kid's dad that the best way to improve reading is to let his kid read everything and anything: newspapers, comic books, advertising circulars, sports scores....everything. I also told him that I would be very glad to have the boy read aloud with me and that I'd be glad to listen and coach him.
Have any bloggers tutored children lately?
